Day 284-285 – Hillsborough, Carriacou, Grenada

On the advice of my aunt, I had booked a night on Carriacou island, the second island of Grenada (the third is called Petit Martinique).

When I called to confirmed my booking, I saw that not only it hadn’t been confirmed, but when I had enquired originally I had mistaken the month and tried to book for February. But they still had a room, so all is well that ends well.

I took the ferry (the staff kindly hand out paper bags in case your stomach requires one), and arrive on the island without mishap (I may have stopped reading half-way through, though).

I quick comparison between my surroundings and Google Maps made me realise quite soon that instead of landing in Hillsborough, the island’s main town, we were in Tyrell Bay, way South of my destination.

No problem, I thought to myself, the beach I want to spend the day at is half-way between, I just have to take the bus! …There aren’t any buses on Sundays, only taxis. That I hadn’t budgeted.

But still, I bought snacks and and a meal to eat in the beach, took a taxi, spent the day on a gorgeous beach called rightly Paradise Beach, with blindingly white sand, turquoise sea, and almond trees to shade your resting place.

I took the taxi again to get to my B&B, spent the night in the company of a few mosquitoes, and since the afternoon ferry was still south of the town… after a look around, I took the bus back to the beach, spent the half-day there, took a new bus to the ferry, and went back on the main island!

That trip back I spent on the roof deck, in a seat in a shade, and enjoyed the view throughout.
