Day 110 – Coober Pedy, Australia

I waved a metaphoric good-bye to Alice Springs this morning. 8 hours of bus and I’m at Coober Pedy, a town that lives around opal mining. It’s too late tonight to explore, but I got the whole day tomorrow before leaving again, driving through the night to Adelaide.

I left Alice Springs with more stuff than I came with, it’s amazing how things accumulate. Like trekking poles, more water bottles, and bits of fabric because I have a yen to sew a bit, and of course I still have from Katherine a hat, a day backpack, a huge bottle of sunscreen and moisturising cream.

I also got cracked skin because dry air is wonderful to dry your laundry in two hours, but it works just as well on the skin of my heels. So, I apply cream religiously and hope to avoid having the same problem on the other foot.

Tomorrow I hope to see a mining museum, browse a few opal shops, and take more pictures of the spaceship. My hostel is of course underground, as is most of the city. It’s not for people who avoid enclosed spaces!

So… ever seen Pitch Black? The sci-fi movie with Vin Diesel where well… quite quickly, there is no light? And of course bad things happen in the dark. So… when shooting the movie, they left some prop behind. Including a spaceship. Yeah!
