Day 46 – Ko Yao Noi, Thailand

I wanted a bungalow by the beach, I wanted blue sea and palm trees, and I’ve found my paradise.

To reach it, now, was the fun part. First, you take a taxi half-way through the island, and that’s expensive. Then, you take a speedboat to your island -the price is fair-, then you share a tuk-tuk to your final destination.

The check-in was incredibly easy: didn’t ask for my name, my passport, of the safety deposit, pointed me to my bungalow, the key for on the door.

I have a room with a fridge, a fan, a double bed, a mosquito net, a few lizards, there is a bathroom attached with the occasional ants and cockroach, no hot water, but it’s hardly needed, especially since the water is warmed at first by the pipes.

I have only to cross the road to access the beach, where there are benches and hammock to swing on. I was nastily surprised at my first swim by rocks underwater; they were smooth and covered by algae, fortunately. At low tide on the evening I marked their place to be more careful next time.

On the first pictures the tide is almost high: at high tide the beach is completely covered. I will do the hammock-above-the-sea thing one of these days!

Fast-forward to today, day 47: I went for a swim again, with the beach almost fully covered. Once one get used to having strange things underfoot, such as coconuts rolling in the undertow, swimming gets fun.

The water is light blue but is not that clear: it is full of sand -the waves are strong and move the sand around-, so one gets surprises. But no more rocks.

When the tide is high, I hear the waves from my bungalow. I love that noise, it reminds me of holidays in Brittany as a child. It is a sound of uncomplicated childhood, family, and family gatherings.
