Cameron Highlands
Day 55 – Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, Malaysia
My first impressions are bittersweet. I took an afternoon bus, which means that my impressions are from the view through the window. (Very comfortable bus, with ample leg-room.) Since we are now in high hills, I believe the altitude is between 1500m and 2000m above sea level, the road was in its last part twisty and overhanging deep valleys.
There is the charm of terraced hillsides, but there is far more the hideous gradients of plastic hothouses stretching up and down the steep hills. We cross villages and small town were small, poor and dilapidated dwellings alternate with huge apartment blocks. Tourists and souvenirs shops line the road (you can buy plush strawberries), and a few luxury resorts advertise their services.
At first sight, Tanah Rata is better maintained, but as it is the main tourist hub of the region, I’m not surprised. The poverty and lack of care is probably swept a bit further, beyond the main street.
On the positive side, the air is cool here. Like, you could almost think of putting a light (very light) jacket on. Amazing!
I’ve booked a half-day tour for tomorrow, they have packed so many things in less than 5 hours that at a guess each tour will be quick. There are many walking trails around, I hope to wander a bit if they are not too steep and see if I can snap cute pictures.
On a lighter note, I walked this morning a bit more in George Town before leaving and I took more pictures to complete the galleries of the city and of street art: I encourage you to have a new look!
The fire house.
Wow quelle classe cette caserne de pompiers 😮 J’espère que tu seras contente de ton tour !
